This is true. High Admiral Mathews made the decision, though, to have her gain seniority with the RMN so that when she returned to Grayson, she would be more likely to be listen to. He was afraid that otherwise she would be relegated to the category of oddity.

This book is going to be the best thing ever... unless RFC does that young!Tom short story I want so badly. (Come on, anthologies!)

I do wonder what the optimum grade to pull her back might be-- I wouldn't leave her all the way til Captain. I think she needs enough RMN experience for the natives to take her as seriously as they do regular female RMN personnel, but then I think she's going to have to pay her dues for a rank or two in the GSN as well. The RMN can prove her competence at her job, but she'll also need to prove herself in all the other little ways-- like wanting to be an officer and not a "princess", for example. If they drop her in with her own ship, she'll be too much an outsider still. Perhaps when she gets her next promotion?

And a totally random thought--oooh, here we go: when will we first see loaners to the RHN? They'll need a couple to work with the new tech for the first bit, right? 'Cause that would be amazing.

Of course I know the dangers of placing them in the line of fire, fondly remembering Admiral Couvousier.

But perhaps a novel showcasing their talents before they became cemented in their present posts.

For instance, Shannon Foraker. We were lucky to have met Shannon before she became uber-valuable.

Of course, certain Admirals would argue, rightfully so, that she was always valuable.

I for one miss my little resident tac-witch. But would it not be nice to see Hemphill, Caparelli, and Givens in their earlier years?

Even Couvousier. What battles they could have fought!

Perhaps I missed a book that does showcase their talents??? (my fingers are not crossed behind me back :D )

I don't think there has ever been any textev for Pat Given's early career. We do know that Tom Caparelli was critically injusred while on duty in Silesia and got put back together by one Alfred Harrington (while he was still a RMN doctor)--mentioned in Ashes of Victory, IIRC.

But yeah, seeing some more background history for pat and Tom would be nice.

The arrangement was more to do with getting her trained in a Navy used to female officers, with full expectations of maximising their potentials, something Grayson's men are still adjusting to in their preconceptions of women, especially women from their own culture.

So yes, the intention was to make sure Abigail returns to the GSN an experienced officer who wouldn't hesitate to assert herself and more importantly, someone the males aren't going to get into the habit of patronising.

Well let's be about it!

I'm just ready for Abigail to strut her stuff. She should drop it while it's hot, and it's hot now, with the SLN and Mesa to deal with!

Come on, let's have some Abby fun!

Pat Givens was a senior adviser to the Second Space Lord during King Roger's reign (when she was a lieutenant SG). Then, there's a large gap in her career where it's assumed she spent all of her time in the naval intelligence track. She was actually Second Space Lord (as a Vice Admiral) for the First Havenite War before being beached by the High Ridge Administration. When the Grantville government was formed she was restored as the head of ONI and was promoted to full Admiral. There's no mention of her ever having a space-going command. Too bad, she is one of my favorite major secondary characters. She's always so steady and reliable and doesn't shirk her responsibilities. She's a nice foil to the idiots who run the Sollies' ONI (which we've gotten an entirely unpleasant look at thanks to our interactions with al-Fanudahi and Teague).

Caparelli and Givens, though, have been admirals since the beginning - Caparelli was actually First Space Lord in On Basilisk Station, and I think Pat Givens has spent most of her career with ONI.

Caparelli was not First Space lord in OBS, he did not become FSL until the beginning of SVW. Sir James Bowie Webster Baron New Dallas was FSL.
