Yes. She was serving with the RMN (in the same way RMN officers have been loaned to the GSN) to gain experience and seniority before she rejoined the GSN. After Monica and her stint on Hexapuma she was planning on returning to the GSN, but accepted the tac officer slot on the Tristram because 1) it was a ridiculously good post and 2) being in charge of her own tac section (on a Roland-class destroyer, no less) would give her a lot more credibility in the GSN.

Honestly, I think we'll be seeing her in the RMN for awhile longer, since she seems to be stepping into the role Katherine Alexander-Harrington was slated for before Eric Flint accelerated the timeline - it's easier to have her be a POV character when she's in the RMN. And now that the Grand Alliance means Havenite personnel will be able to help fill out the ranks of the GSN too.... :D

She still needs to serve a stint as someone's XO first before she can be considered for a ship of her own as well. I figure it's at that point that she might be moved to the GSN (or perhaps her first ship command will be RMN and her second will be GSN).

Thanks rose.
And again the bunch grows.

I often wonder how Sonja Hemphill, Thomas Caparelli, and Pat Givens would fair in battle.

Of course I know the dangers of placing them in the line of fire, fondly remembering Admiral Couvousier.

But perhaps a novel showcasing their talents before they became cemented in their present posts.

For instance, Shannon Foraker. We were lucky to have met Shannon before she became uber-valuable.

Of course, certain Admirals would argue, rightfully so, that she was always valuable.

I for one miss my little resident tac-witch. But would it not be nice to see Hemphill, Caparelli, and Givens in their earlier years?

Even Couvousier. What battles they could have fought!

Perhaps I missed a book that does showcase their talents??? (my fingers are not crossed behind me back :D )

Hemphill, at least, commanded Grendelsbane for awhile during the first war - that was before she was pretty much moved permanently to R&D. And she actually beached herself during the Janacek Admiralty because she couldn't stomach serving under him, even though she's politically a Conservative.

Caparelli and Givens, though, have been admirals since the beginning - Caparelli was actually First Space Lord in On Basilisk Station, and I think Pat Givens has spent most of her career with ONI.

That said, it's not entirely out of the question that we'll get a short story or two back when Caparelli and Hemphill &co were serving officers. Actually, I think Hemphill and White Haven appear in "I Will Build My House of Steel" when Hemphill is still a lieutenant - and at that point they were already nursing a healthy rivalry!

I'm fairly certain that Sonja Hemphill had an actual combat command during the war.

Thanks again!

May I assume that "I Will Build My House Of Steel," is the same as "House of Steel?"

Yes and no. House of Steel is the entire companion volume. "I Will Build My House of Steel" is the short story/novella in the companion. :P But yes, it's the same book.

There's one coming out at some point for Haven and the Andermani called House of Lies, and one about Mesa and the SL slated for after that called House of Shadows.

Three guesses as to which one I can't wait for, and the first two don't count.

Wow! It's like I just drank an energy drink. Can't wait!

For me personally, it would be hard to choose just one.

But being that I am a good listener...carrying the one, factoring in your fascination with all things Haven--rounding off to the nearest Admiral...hmmm

An educated guestimate..."House of Lies!"
