You've obviously never encountered Jerry Pornelle's political writing. He once said he was "somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan". Neither Pournelle or Heinlein were libertarians. Heinlein was closer, but not much.

They probably could if anyone is still around several million years later.

Why didn't they carry Band-Aids for the engine?

They probably did but in the course of 3.5 centuries I'd expect they probably have used up most of the spare parts and tools including those they could use to make more parts or remanufacture old into something near usable condition without access to refined metals or other materials.
****

Just my opinion of course and probably not worth the paper it's not written on.

I realize that things are a bit out of synch in David's world. But does this book have a publication date?

Their descendants, who now have benefit of prolong -- compliments of the Havenites.

As far as I can remember, this novella will be part of the 2nd companion volume to the Honorverse "House of Lies"

But in October, there is an anthology ("Infinite stars", ed. by Brian Thomas Schmidt) with a new shortstory about Eloise Pritchard and her way to the Aprilists in it. There's also a Snippet or two from this story around here ...

I suspect it is a case of background notes that took on a life of its own. Not that that's a bad thing.

I think that's a different novella set in Haven.

in the 'Next Book' thread here RFC said the novel Uncompromising Honor "may or may not come bound with a short story/novella (already completed) which tells the tale on the creation of the Bolthole and finally tells you guys where it is."

This "Dark Fall" appears to be that novella; since we know that eventually Bolthole gets set up on the hardscrabble planet these poor colonists divert to (after Haven finds a wormhole bridge between their area and a nearby star)

That is my take on it as well and in that snippet we were made privy to Haven giving them the benefit of prolong -- though it was the regime before Eloise -- and I question its altruism. But that's another post already laid down.

At any rate, the prolong fact is what led me to beg the question of whether the descendants of the host planet will claim true ownership eons into the future when their original planet licks its wounds and cleans itself up and becomes the perfect mirror image of Earth.
