But David should've had an "exposé", that he could've copied for the Artist; something like a very rough guide about the things that have to happen in the book. Something along the lines of: "Chapter 1 - Harahap will find reasons to change allegiance to the Malign"; "Chapter 5 - Sandra Crandall gets her FF-staff-member (which has just been vaccinated with the appropriate nanotech ...)"; "Chapter 20: Terekhov goes to Seraphim" or so. Just the bare bones without any actual meat - but still enough to give him some idea about the content of the story.

But wouldn't that require the artist to be familiar with the previous books that mentioned Harahap, Crandall, Terekhov, Seraphim &etc?

As far as I know, all (or as near as all that the difference doesn't matter) jackets of the Honorverse-books are from the same artist - David Mattingly. That's why I think it is a solid enough assumption, that he not only did the artwork but actually read the books ...
