Yeah, my big complaint about Spindle has always been that they didn't wait longer between the first and second salvos. They had plenty of time, and wouldn't have risked wasting a (rather large number of) missiles. While Tenth Fleet didn't know about the imminent ammo shortage, I would think they would have some concern about a local shortage (and peeved supply officers).

But as I remember, Henke had decided long ago against Byng that it was time to take the gloves off. She did, and never got around to putting them back on. lol

Seriously. How was Henke to really know the effectiveness of Crandall's forces? IINM, Byng's forces were OFS ships. Crandall's forces represented a true Battle Fleet. And she needed to defeat that true Battle Fleet in a manner that would be taken to heart by Battle Fleet and the SLN. Or they wouldn't get the message. Right? My memory is a bit fuzzy.

They had no reason to anticipate a permanent ammo shortage. The war with Haven was paused, with a significant stockpile being accumulated.

Crandall had the most powerful opposing force for hundreds of light years(the second powerful was what, Verrochio's FF detachment or decimated Monica?) and Henke knew two squadrons of SD(P)s with full magazines were on their way.

Under such circumstances, knowing I face some seventy SDs and screen with only a few dozen battlecruisers and cruisers, I would not be overly worried about ammo conservation.

It's hammered into RMN commanders to fight hard, using everything they have. And even now, it's not a huge problem, with Havenite-built pods and MDMs readily available if it comes to that, before Trevor's Star and Beowulf set up new missile lines.

Give Mike only her tube-launched Mark-16's and it might have been a bit dicier, IMHO. So let's run the numbers...
My thoughts only, but if she didn't have the 23's, I'd be tempted to let the Sag-C's plus pods and ammo ships "play hammer the center of Crandall's SD wall" using pure pods, then 3-4 stacked salvo's. That's 12x14x40 missiles less pen-aids, etc, plus a set of reloads from the ammo ships, just for conversation let's give the 20% back. Call it 6400 missiles or enough to hit 20 SD's with 200 missiles and 12 with 120, just for "big damage" (aka knocking out as many SD tubes as possible).

Somewhere around the third Salvo, the Nike's etc. drop a full pod launch at any "flag" acting vessels, the more capable cripples, and the remainder at another say dozen SD's with "intent to mission kill" salvo's.

Does anyone really think that the Sollies won't still have to surrender by the time the Nikes are ready to drop a second salvo of pods or shipkillers?

A little background 10th fleet was equipped with the latest Mk16 missile which IIRC is the mod G. IIRC Hexapuma had the standard Mk16 which was just barely capable of punching out BC's.

Here is the capabilities of the Mk16.
IIRC
Mk16 warhead 15mt standard weapon

Mk16 mod E warhead 15mt with improved grav lensing nominal improvement x 2 of Mk16.

Mk16 mod E-1 boosted warhead to 20mt improved grav lensing nominal improvement x 3 of Mk16, roughly equivalent to capital grade missile circa 1900 PD.

Mk16 mod G warhead 40mt improved grav lensing nominal improvement x 5 equal to capital grade missile circa 1919 PD.

In the Suburb where I grew up we have a antique glass shop next to a busy interstate route with heavy truck traffic. 3 times over the years, a Semi-truck ran a traffic light and crashed into the building. Twice the owners rebuilt, the third time they just took the insurance money.

So uniquely in America, our version is a Semi in a Glass shop.
