Given a chance to surrender, a single chance. You might have a smart commander after all.

Give the Sollie big battle fleet ONE CHANCE to surrender? If I were that Grand Alliance Admiral...AND if I had beyond the reasonable doubt that enough time had elapsed to insure that the Sollie Admiral should have known better....NO!!

No single chance to surrender. I would just mouse trap them if possible or if not, then exploit my missile advantage and I would just blow them all away. All of them. No survivors. NEVER EVER NEVER GIVE the bad guys a chance to hurt you.

You can give them the one chance to surrender without coming into there range, as has happened already, and then blow them to dust bunnies if they refuse to take it. I agree if there already a threat blow them away, but if there no threat yet give them the one chance to take to there life pods.

"You outrank me, but I must respectfully disagree Sir". If that Sollie Admiral has had enough time to figure things out by himself and that means if he comes within range ....blow him away. No prior warning. Sir.... he already has shown lethal intent... he is here in our system.... and it looks like he brought along most if not all of his friends. Blast him first before he can possible blast even one of us..Sir"

"Sir? What are we going to do with all the POWS? What if they have something nasty left out of our sight? Sir... this is total war. Blast them Sir! We need to kill as many of their ships and people while we possibly can. This war is going to become totally nasty very quick. If we are not very careful or lucky here..... the Sollies just may roll over us. My read Sir". HB of CJ (old coot)

"Sir... by the way I was born in Big Lick and I am listening right now to the third movement of "Ma' Vlast". Thought you might want to know... Sir".

At this point, I am in the "blast them into smithereens and screw offering surrender terms" camp. The SL has proved, time and time again, that it cannot be trusted. After the slaughter at New Tuscany they lost any right they had to surrender terms. Blast 'em.

The sad part is that most of us on this Forum have never been in combat. The quick and the dead. Sorry; but that is the way it really is. HB of CJ. (old coot) 1967-1968. War by nature is a very horrible thing not to be experienced by sane folks.:( :(
Given the RMN range advantage and the need to win the PR war, not just militarily crush the current SLN fleet, I'm with those who are in favor of demanding a surrender.

After all if he's moving on the planet you've got hours when he's in your range, but outside his own effective powered range of either your fleet or the planet (even if he has Cataphracts)

It's a lot easier for their PR to turn a commander into a martyr if the League public perceives his fleet's destruction as unfair or overkill. (Doesn't matter to public opinion if that's crazy - or that the destruction was militarily sound).

But it's harder to do that if he got his nose rubbed in the fact that he was totally outclassed, and still refused to surrender. Then it's his bullheadedness and/or stupidity that's (in the public perception) responsible for his own fleet's destruction.

Ideally, IMHO, you want member systems pulling themselves out of the League because it's obviously corrupt and incompetent. You don't want to give the League any unnecessary public rallying cries - because the chance that you'll be able to economically cripple all those planets long term is near nil - so you don't want them interested in revenge once their R&D has closed the tech gap.

(Now if the attacker makes another play for the terminus, that could remove the free time as he could drop in within his own weapons range of it)

I tend to be in the no surrender camp myself. Part of what we have been dealing with is the League's almost absolute belief that it can call the tune without paying the fiddler or to phrase it another way, to insist that someone else pay the fiddler. Mandarins sending out a fleet to Beowulf is more of the same.

There is another side to it, however. Jonathan is right to point out that there is a political vector to this. I think that the loss of another fleet providing a further stimulus to break up of League rather than providing a rallying point.

But still if calling upon the other side to surrender can be done without endangering one's self tacticly, there probably is political advantage in not gaining a reputation for being TOO murderous.

Followed a few minutes later by a salvo of SLN missiles hitting Beowulf at 0.6c. Oops. Terribly sorry about that.

Since RFC has mentioned a certain dislike for Eridiani Edict violations, I expect something a bit less drastic, but a lot more senseless, such as specifically targeting a large civilian platform, causing maybe 2 to 3 milion casualties, of course followed by the total destruction of the SLN fleet. That should be enough of a massacre to convince a lot of SL members that it's time to leave, and reduce the fear of reprisals enough to actually go through with it.

In the "Request Surrender First" vs. the "Kill'em all and let The Tester Sort them out." debate, I come down firmly on the "it depends" side.... 8-)

If the BF or FF forces are 40M kilometers away, you are well out of their range and presuming you have MDM in your forces along with Ghost Rider, you can hit them pretty much at will without damage--and maintain an acceleration that keeps you out of their range. So the prudent thing to do is what we've seen Mike Henke, Hiram Ivanov, Duchess Harrington, Jacob Zavala, and Aivars Therekov already do--tell them what you are going to do, demonstrate some level of capability to back yourself up, and if they cross your line, back up your words with missiles--but give them a chance to surrender.

As others have mentioned, this is a Social-Political struggle as much as it is a Military one, and slaughtering people out-of-hand is not condusive to a long and just peace. After all, the Chinese are still a bit ticked off at the Japanese over the 1930's-40's and I doubt Russians have a lot of love for Germany 68 years later.

Now the above said, if I'm guarding a wormhole with a division of SD(P)'s, 4 SAG-B's, and a whole lot of pods, and 4 Battle Squadrons of Sollie SD's hyper in 4.1M Kilometers away, I'm not asking any questions--I'm rolling pods and letting them have it with everything I got. Or if I'm escorting a convoy and 4 FF BC's come swooping in, they get (maybe) one warning then I'm engaging full-bore.

So like I say, it depends. It often does in combat.
