Does anyone have any idea why the Mass Market edition of this book is so hard to find? My copy got ruined recently due to a leaky roof pouring water on the area where I sit while reading and keep the book I'm currently reading (I was about a third of the way through when it happened.) So I thought I would go online and order a replacement.
But everywhere I look the book is either out of stock or selling for well over MSRP. It makes no sense especially since this edition is less then 2.5 years old and I can easily find much older RFC books, including earlier books from this subseries for MSRP. Has someone at Baen been slacking off at the printing press or something? Even the links on the book's page at the Baen website are either charging significantly beyond the proper price or out of stock. |

I cannot give you an answer, but you might have better chances to get an answer at the "Baen's Bar" Forum. |

Well, last time I was in a bookstore, they had turned half the store into a toy store instead of books. The books they DID have on the shelf were from authors which had published 10+ years ago. Probably from long ago mass printed and stored books. It would not surprise me at all if the printing industry is near extinct so those who are interested in a series buy the hardback and do not buy the paperback. Personally, I prefer paperbacks as they store easier and read easier as one can hold in a single hand. Of course a book like House of Steel needs hardback(I know it came "paperback"). When I went to buy To End in Fire, they had EXACTLY 1 copy in the bookstore and it was hardback, not paperback. Last time I was in there, there was no version of either, but there was older DW books.
Everyone is reading their books via audio, or electronic of the newer generation. Personally, I hate both for the most part. My eyes hate electronic and I much more enjoy envisioning in my head from reading the actual pages. If I am in a car I hate audio books as they are too distracting if I am REALLY listening and if I am paying attention to road, I am not listening and miss majority of the book. I have nieces/nephews who have taken to audio books, but when TESTED on MEMORY retention of said books, they test HORRIFICALLY, but if they actually READ the actual paper, they retain FAR more information. I know I retain far more information when reading a physical book and NOT an electronic book or audio book. Forces you to concentrate more on a single item. _________

Amazon does show the paperback version as more expensive than the hardback. Baen Books does show both at normal prices, but I did not check to see if it was out of stock. Your best deal would be an e-book version (which should never be out of stock); a tablet with e-book software is almost as nice as a book and then you have searchable text.
