I'd like to request all of your help. This is little more than my own curiosity.
If I may infringe upon your hospitality, I'd like to ask three specific questions. Having read all of the Honorverse books, and even the spin-offs, is a given... 1. If you were told you were going to be stranded on an island in a cabin for a year and the only reading material you are allowed would be one Honorverse novel, which would it be? 2. Given the same option, yet assuming this will be your first read of the book (yet knowing all that you know) which would you hope you'd get? 3. If you could only read one of his Honorverse books in your lifetime, which would you prefer it be? Reasons why would be quite fine and, of course, appreciated but not necessary. Thanks in advance. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. The three volume omnibus edition, in chronological order. Autographed, of course, with all numbers matching. The only question is, whether or not to correct things like "The Great Resizing," and continuity errors, or just let them be, and include the corrigenda in authorial notes. |

I inadvertently lost mine by hitting the wrong button. The computer, not the dog, ate my homework this time. I'll try to recreate.
My answer to all three is "On Basilisk Station." The series just wouldn't have had the same passion for me had I not read that one first. I'm not sure any other book in the series could have captured my imagination and attention, and had enough of an umpact on me to prompt me to buy another had it not been for OBS. OBS is what set the stage for the entire series, IMO. Without it, you wouldn't know who Harrington was and what she overcame. You cannot know where you're going, if you don't know where you've been. You cannot know where you are if you don't know where you were. As it is with life. You cannot know who Harrington is if you don't know who she was. IMO. I was rather sad that the film was going to skip it and begin with HOTQ. OBS is what would have gotten under readers' skin. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

I would take a solar driven E-Reader with me on the Island with all of the honorverse books and a lot books more.
But if I really should choose, it would be "on Basilisk Station", too. I think the whole series wouldn´t make sense without that book. |

Tough question. My vote for best self-contained Honorverse story would go to Crown of Slaves, but there's not much of Honor in that, so I'd have to go for the best mainline novel, Flag in Exile. The image of Honor stalking into the Conclave of Steadholders and demanding justice for her dead just sticks with you.

One Honorverse novel to reread... I'd be quite tempted to buck the trend and got with Honor Among Enemies, or even (gasp) Shadow of Saganami.
Much as I love Honor i really like Ginger and Wanderman from HAE, plus the Q-ships / first podlayers; Seeing Caslet and Forraker losing their ship doing the right thing... And Hexapuma and all the fresh you snotties, plus the Battle of Monica? Hard to go wrong. But I agree if I was using my knowledge to pick one of them for me to read for the first time it would have to be On Basilisk Station. The other I Imodium enjoy rereading only because I knew what came before. |

1. Flag in Exile - great story, so much interesting stuff happening on the ground and then in space. Satisfying conclusion too.
2. Flag in Exile - this was probably the hardest question to answer but I'm assuming that after I read it I would still be stuck on that island with it for the rest of the year. 3. On Basilisk Station - I really liked the way Honor demonstrated leadership. |
