But Zavala was really treacherous! He wasn't following the script Duenas wrote for him. The treacherous Manticoran didn't even inform him that he had no intention of doing anything like that!

There's two maxims when fighting a battle or war.
1) The enemy always has a say in your plan. Or, No plan survives contact with the enemy

2) If your not cheating, your not trying hard enough.

Good examples of this are Operation Fortitude or Operation Mincemeat.

There's another one I can think of.

If an enemy has three options open to him he will usually choose the fourth one.

Very true, it is said that the world's best swordsman doesn't fear another good swordsman he fears the worst one, because he has no idea what the idiot will do.

That will also be the option most damaging one to your plan.

Just because you can only see three option dos not mean the enemy can not see ones you are unaware of.
