True enough. Probably Honor would be nicer than the Ballroom if they find/found her first...

One other. I suspect Honor and Tom Thiesman have compared notes and found that they opposed one another at Fourth Yeltsin, and mused that both of them could have met their deaths that day if Theisman had continued his attack...

Well, I don't know. Under the right circumstances, like if Elaine presented the info to Honor in the right light, such as while she's bringing her more juice - e.g., "Whilst hiding out on the run, I came about some unlikely information regarding a certain MAligney Hole. I hear your Star Empire may find this news... worthy of a pardon?" There's a thought, RFC can help to rehabilitate Elaine. :D

Because with all of her faults, I like Elaine. Chock it up to some version of the Stockholm Syndrome that manifests itself as such in novels. <shrugs>

I always wondered if Honor knew, that her armsmen knew, of her "controversial affair" with White Haven during the sensitive time she and White Haven were "cavorting" on eggshells. Or did they really allow her her pride and dignity and chance to play innocent? Like not telling her that her slip was always hanging after leaving White Haven's side.

Did Honor ever come to know how Emily's hired help loathed her? I got that impression that they secretly wished Honor would place herself in a cultivator in hopes of cultivating some common decency - the trollop. Have we had any words from the help since? It seems Honor, certainly with Nimitz around, would have known how they felt about her in short order.

My apology to all, and to RFC. In that light, I suppose that the rehabilitation would be accredited to Honor. Not surprising, since she's done it before with Jaruwalski. Would that be enough to establish a pattern? I think so - considering that people used to "Name That Tune" in one note. And guess a puzzle on "Wheel of Fortune" with one letter. Honor as a rehabilitation specialist sounds great - just please don't give her any more brass to wear for it.

Did you notice that Honor was awarded everything except a pair of brass balls? I guess the oversight was due to the fact that she already had a pair - each inherited from a parent.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Thanks for digging this out of the archives Somtaaw. I'd vaguely remembered something to that effect and its touching.

Moreover, even as an armsman, exactly how would a Grayson man approach their female Steadholder to discuss the affairs of her bedroom?

Very, very carefully like approaching a minefield? I don't think it even gets discussed by male armsmen with their male Steadholders, they might disapprove but a Steadholder is almost above reproach, unless they go way beyond the line, like Burdette, or Mueller when he was blackmailed.

Of course most of them had also been serving their Steadholders for ~30 years, and were nearing the end of their operational lifetime until the Alliance brought modern medical to Grayson. It's the new crop of Steadholders and Armsmen that are going to have to worry about Armsman/Steadholder relations

At one point in storyline, I seriously thought that Honor would somehow rehabilitate Bachfish.

By the time Honor reached a stage where she had both the reputation and rank to rehabilitate Bachfish, he's been 'tainted' for so long it wouldn't matter if the Empress herself ordered it, he's done.

But he's still in the uniform, even if he has been beached for Honor's entire career, and as he admitted, he's been a part of the SKM's Silesian Humint network for all those years. I'm pretty sure he also understated how valuable he'd been to Given's networks, I don't imagine they'd shift two ships and Silly naval warrants to just any old spy.

He might be working more openly with Admiral Sarnow, they might actually be old friends or Captain/XO relationship, working to stabilize Silesia and bring safety and security to all his old contacts.

Note: I suspect a possible connection, because Bachfish was a Captain (JG I think?) until Honor's Middy/Ensign cruise, and Sarnow was jumped clean past Commodore 2 years early to make him a Rear Admiral (red) just prior to Honor making List and taking command of Nike. That puts Sarnow and Bachfish in loosely equivalent rank zones prior to Bachfish getting beached.

I have to disagree. Bachfisch was a Captain of the List when Honor reported to him(otherwise he wouldn't have been gradually promoted to full Admiral on half-pay! That little perk only applies to List Captains).

Furthermore, Sarnow wasn't jumped past Commodore - he was already one setting Hancock station up - Hamish wanted to jump him up and keep him in command, but Webster decided to go with Parks instead. And Honor made List at the end of OBS, being jumped past Captain JG.

Sarnow was likely a Lieutenant of some sort - exactly halfway between Honor and Bachfisch.

Good catch on the List captain thing, I hadn't remembered that bit.

Short Victorious War wrote:"I'm not questioning his competence, only his seniority," Webster shot back. "No one admires the job he's done more than I do, but now that the yard facilities are coming on-line we're upgrading the station to a full task force. That means we need at least a vice admiral out there, and if I put a rear admiral—and a rear admiral of the red, at that!—in command, I'll have a mutiny on my hands."

"Then promote him."

"Lucien already bumped him from commodore at least two years early." Webster shook his head. "No, forget it, Hamish. Sarnow's good, but he just doesn't have the seniority for it."

 ok, so he was already a Commodore, but they did jump him early so I was half-right at least.

Could have sworn though Honor didn't actually make List until end of HotQ

Short Victorious War wrote:MacGuiness was waiting, napkin neatly folded over one forearm, as she slid into her chair. One of the perks for a captain of the list was a permanently assigned steward, though Honor still wasn't entirely positive how MacGuiness had chosen himself for that duty. It was just one of those inevitable things, and he watched over her like a mother hawk, but he had his own ironclad rules.

Bolded the key bit, that really made it look like she only made List somewhere between HotQ and tSVW. But I double checked the wiki to be sure, guess I forgot she got her List promotion just a bare 2 months before taking command of the CA Fearless. Didn't even catch it as I started my latest re-read of Honorverse.

Here's what I see in the future for Captain Thomas Bachfich. While he recovers from having his legs shot off he'll be hired by Mark Sarnow as a consultant on the ins and outs of whose who of the Confed. After he recovers his shipping company is going to undergo a steady expansion when Skydomes of Grayson starts throwing him shipping contracts and with a quiet word from Honor to some of her friends like Stacy Haumptman, Catherine Montainege and Elizabeth Winton (High-security government contracts) he'll get even bigger.
