So, I'm reading the free chapters of the House of Steel novella and it occurs to me that what Roger is doing, is to begin the work that would ultimately become the reason why the Peeps had him assassinated.

It's just the tiniest bit of a morbid feeling, I think.

True, and yet it was Roger's duty to his subjects to do so. Without his forcing the start of preparations, the Peeps would have likely had a much easier time steamrolling Manticore.

They definitely would have had it easier. In fact, they would have steamrollered right over the pathetic handful of battleships and dreadnoughts the Conservatives and Liberals considered sufficient as a Home Guard during Roger's naval service period.

Once you've read the whole story, you'll learn that the naval buildup was only part of the reason. :geek:

Two words: San Martin and I'll leave it at that! ;)

If you haven't bought HoS, I'd certainly recommend it.
